You may have seen that haze lingering over the Lowcountry for the past few days. It wasn’t fog, though. It was the smoky haze of burnt gunpowder and continued violence. Today we will tell you about two murderers and we will solve the shooting at the Chuck E. Cheese in West Ashley.
On Friday afternoon CPD responded to a murder on Percy Street. The victim, Jarrod Brent Howard had been shot during an apparent drug deal gone bad or one of those drug rip-offs which are so common, yet you never hear anything about. Howard had been arrested in January of 2014 for PWID Cocaine and simple possession of marijuana and released on a $20,000 bond. The 9th Circuit Solicitor, following their usual policy of “the first felony is a freebie”, dismissed the cocaine charge in August.
Saturday morning, police arrested Ahshaad Owens, aka “Shaad Owens“, and Phillip Jewell II for the murder of Howard.
We hate to be the ones to point out the obvious, but two black guys just murdered a white guy. Strangely enough, all we hear are the crickets.
We know you folks will be stunned to learn these two were out on bond at the time they setup and murdered Howard.
In October of 2013 Owens was charged with 2nd Degree Burglary. He was released on a $5,000 bond.
Jewell was arrested in July of 2013 and charged with 2nd Degree Burglary. He was released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. He was arrested again in August 2013 and charged with Grand Larceny.
We would like to point out some inconsistencies here. As you can see, the white kid who just graduated from high school and was on his way to college was given a $20,000 bond for possession of cocaine. This was his first offense.
Owens, who committed a burglary, was given a $5,000 bond. That burglary was also his first adult offense.
Jewell, who also committed a burglary for his first adult offense, was given a personal recognizance bond.
All three of these offenses are felonies.
Interesting? It certainly is not an aberration as we have noticed similar discrepancies in the past.
Back to the rundown. Jewell was also arrested in August 2013 on a charge of Grand Larceny and 2nd Degree Burglary. This time he was released on a total bond of $75,000.
On Saturday afternoon a shooting at a West Ashley Chuck E. Cheese contributed to the haze. Via social media we have learned the name of the suspect and the name of one of the victims. Turns out this shooting is probably gang related.
The victim we have identified is Devante Jenkins of North Charleston. He associates himself with the “M$M” gang out of the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood. He is also known as “Rum Jenkins“. We believe his pal and fellow “victim” “Pick A Boo” has a last name of Harrison. We didn’t have time to dig for his first name before work this morning.
As you can see, Jenkins is on probation. Let’s see what he’s done. Jenkins was a busy boy from 2010 to 2013. He was arrested multiple times, released multiple times and all of his charges were allowed to accrue and pend until the 9th Circuit Solicitor gave him a sweet plea deal in September of 2013. He even had some bonds revoked a time or two, but that didn’t stop him. He was sentenced by Judge Thomas “Felon’s Friend” Hughston.
2010 Charges:
Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun - Plead guilty. Sentenced to 1 year time served.
Minor in Possession of a Handgun - Dismissed by the 9th Circuit Solicitor.
PWID Marijuana - Plead guilty. Sentenced to 922 days allegedly served.
PWID Marijuana Near a School - Dismissed by the 9th Circuit Solicitor.
2011 Charges:
Attempted Murder - Reduced to Assault & Battery 1st Degree by the 9th Circuit Solicitor. Sentenced to 5 years, suspended on time served and 2 years probation.
Possession of a Firearm During a Violent Crime - Dismissed by the 9th Circuit Solicitor.
2012 Charges:
2nd Degree Lynching - Dismissed by the 9th Circuit Solicitor.
2013 Charges:
Intimidation of Court Officials - Dismissed by the 9th Circuit Solicitor.
Well! Now we see the reason for the sweet plea deal and no prison time.
Devante wants you to know he is willing to get shot up and die to protect this little section of the ghetto.
The guy who fired the shots is willing to go any lengths to stand up for his section of the ghetto.
Here are the surveillance photos of the “person of interest”.
We are seeing some scuttlebutt from the hood on social media is telling us the shooter is a fellow who goes by the name of “Run Way Tookie“. His real name is Thailando Daquan King. He is currently roaming free on bond. King’s criminal history shows a tendency to carry weapons. Here’s a photo of him dated 10 October with a firearm sticking out of his pocket.
And his mugshot from an arrest in August on charges of lying to police and no drivers license.
In addition to the similarities in the photos, we found this entry on King’s Thugbook page advertising the party he was having at the West Ashley Chuck E. Cheese (cec in the west) yesterday. As you can see from the news reports, King was the one escorted out.
In February 2013 King was charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol. He was released on a $50,000 bond which appears to have been reduced to a $20,000 later.
In May of 2013 King was charged with 2nd Degree Burglary and released on a $25,000 bond.
In September of 2013 King was charged with Unlawful Carrying of a Pistol and PWID Marijuana and released on bonds totaling $15,000.
Shots were also fired in the Chicora-Cherokee neighborhood at 3 a.m. Sunday. What do you think the odds are that the Chuck E. Cheese shooting and the shots fired are all related? Hell, who knows anymore with all the gunfire going on in the Lowcountry.
