Serial Heroin Trafficker

Local media grudgingly told you about the March 11th arrest of Edward Maurice Singleton for trafficking heroin. He was arrested with over an ounce of heroin at his Poplar Street home. The media failed to tell you the rest of the story.

Heroin Trafficker

Singleton has been a major heroin trafficker in the Charleston area since the early nineties. Let’s take a look at his arrest record. Let’s look at a summary of his arrests from 1994 through 1996.

1994:

Possession of Heroin

1995:

Trafficking Heroin, PWID Cocaine and PWID Near a School

1996:

Distribution of Heroin, Conspiracy to Distribute Heroin and Distribution of Heroin Near a School.

Those charges accrued. Every time Singleton was released on bond he went right back to trafficking narcotics.

Fortunately for the citizens of the Lowcountry the federal government took over the prosecution and state charges were dismissed. This usually means the criminal will actually be sent to prison for a while, unlike those who plead guilty in our circuit court. Singleton pled guilty in 1996 and was sentenced to seventeen-and-a-half (17.5) years in federal prison. Don’t believe it when you are told there is no early release in the federal prison system. Singleton was released in September of 2010, three years before his 17.5 year sentence was maxed out.

Looks like he decided going straight wasn’t an option. Singleton’s bond on the latest charges was set at $1,100,000 by Judge Lombard. Hopefully the feds will pick up this new case before Judge Hughston lets him run free on probation.
